Prisoners and detainees are particularly vulnerable to human rights abuses. Their access to proper health care services depends upon the jailing authority, and within that, the medical team’s level of awareness of and ability to act according to the rules of medical ethics and human rights guidelines. PHR-Israel’s Prisoners and Detainees Department acts to safeguard prisoners’ rights to diagnosis, medical care and suitable conditions of imprisonment, and for the supervision and protection of medical staff who are subordinate to the various custodial entities. We support prison medical staff’s professional independence and their right to maintain the rules of medical ethics on behalf of their patients.
